Eight games, eight draws, zero change in the standings. But the scoresheets lie. Round 2 of the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 in Peyia, Cyprus on March 30 produced two of the most dramatic saves of the event so far, both in the Women’s section.
Vaishali Rameshbabu sacrificed her queen to escape a lost position against Divya Deshmukh, and Zhu Jiner threw away a two-pawn advantage against Kateryna Lagno. The Open section leaders — Caruana, Praggnanandhaa, and Sindarov — all held with Black. Follow the Candidates 2026 live standings on Shatranj Live.

Unchanged from Round 1. The three leaders had Black in Round 2 and all held comfortably, a sign they’re managing their energy well in the early rounds of a 14-round double round-robin.
Key Games from Candidates 2026 Round 2
Giri 1/2-1/2 Caruana — Catalan
Giri opened with a Catalan and had a slight initiative, but Caruana defused it with the rare 3… Nd7. Both players achieved near-perfect accuracy with no mistakes recorded by the engine.
“I went for a rare line, but he was ready for it. I suffered a little, but played accurately enough” — Fabiano Caruana, who sits joint first after two rounds.
Wei Yi 1/2-1/2 Praggnanandhaa — French Steinitz
Wei Yi’s 1. e4 met Pragg’s French Defense, a rare choice at the top level. Pragg generated counterplay with 16… c4 and briefly held an advantage, but Wei Yi found the accurate 18. f5! to disrupt Black’s center and force liquidation into a drawn endgame.
“I got a good position and time advantage in the opening” — Praggnanandhaa, satisfied with a solid draw with the Black pieces.
Sindarov 1/2-1/2 Blübaum — Petroff, 42 moves
Blübaum’s Petroff Defense neutralized Sindarov’s White advantage. The 2025 World Cup winner missed the pawn sacrifice 16. d5!, which would have created serious coordination problems for Black. Instead, the position simplified into a drawn endgame.
Esipenko 1/2-1/2 Nakamura — English Opening
Esipenko pressed with a slight edge and won a pawn in a complex middlegame, but Nakamura’s endgame defense was impeccable. Nakamura admitted he felt “much worse for probably 30 moves,” though the engine disagreed.

India at the Candidates: Round 2
Praggnanandhaa, 1/2-1/2 vs. Wei Yi (Black)
India’s sole Open section representative chose the French Defense and held comfortably. A point behind would have been costly this early. Instead, Pragg stays at 1.5/2, joint first with Caruana and Sindarov. If he wins this tournament, he faces World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju in an all-India World Championship match.
Divya Deshmukh 1/2-1/2 Vaishali Rameshbabu — the headline game
The first-ever Divya-Vaishali clash at a Candidates. Divya had White in a Queen’s Gambit Declined and got a winning position after Vaishali erred with 34… Ne4? under time pressure, dropping the b7 pawn. Divya was winning. Then she played 37. Qg3? instead of the decisive 37. Qg4!, and Vaishali found the stunning 40… Qxh3+!!, a queen sacrifice that forced a knight fork on f3 and a perpetual check.
“I was not sure what to do after 37.Qg4. I thought my position was very bad” — Vaishali Rameshbabu, after the escape of the tournament so far.
