Here are the Candidates Tournament 2026 round 13 results. Javokhir Sindarov clinched the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 title with a draw against Anish Giri, reaching 9.5/13 with one round to spare. The Uzbek will now challenge World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju for the title later this year. Wei Yi beat Esipenko for the only decisive game in the Open section.

In the Women’s section, Bibisara Assaubayeva beat Anna Muzychuk to tie Vaishali Rameshbabu at 7.5/13, setting up a dramatic final-round showdown. Follow all results live at shatranj.live/candidates.

Sindarov’s draw made the math official: even if Giri won the final round and Sindarov lost, Giri could only reach 8.5/14, still 1 point short of Sindarov’s guaranteed minimum of 9.5/14. According to FIDE, the tournament leader matched Ian Nepomniachtchi’s 2022 record of 9.5 points, but did so with a round still to play.

“I’m very happy, but I’m not that surprised to win this tournament, because I always believed in myself.”Javokhir Sindarov, after clinching the Candidates title

Candidates Tournament 2026 Round 13 Results: Open Section

Giri 1/2-1/2 Sindarov, Queen’s Gambit Declined (D31), 58 moves

The clinching game was professional rather than dramatic. Sindarov played with 99.5% accuracy, which Chess.com called “an essentially perfect game.” Queens were traded around move 20, and Sindarov later pointed to that moment as when he stopped feeling any pressure. Giri had a slightly more active position but never created genuine winning chances. The game simplified into a rook endgame (where each side has only a rook and pawns remaining) that was drawn without problems.

Sindarov’s 50-game unbeaten streak, dating back to Round 3 of the 2025 FIDE Grand Swiss, continued — the longest active streak among elite grandmasters.

Wei Yi 1-0 Esipenko, Petrov Defence (C42), 46 moves

The only decisive game in the Open section. Wei Yi sacrificed castling rights in a sharp Petrov, a line he had tested against Yu Yangyi back in 2017. Esipenko understood the resulting position better than Wei’s opponent nine years ago, but the Chinese GM found a key tactical shot with 23.Bxe4, refuting Esipenko’s piece sacrifice. Wei described the complications as a “deep dark forest” but emerged with a winning advantage.

“I was lucky after the opening because I didn’t like my position.”Wei Yi, after his second win of the tournament, both against Esipenko

Nakamura 1/2-1/2 Bluebaum, Queen’s Gambit Declined (D53), 41 moves

Nakamura pressed for 41 moves but Bluebaum held. Both players are out of contention for the title.

Caruana 1/2-1/2 Praggnanandhaa, Nimzo-Indian (E21), 43 moves

Caruana had White against Praggnanandhaa in a Nimzo-Indian and came close to winning just before the time control, but could not find the breakthrough. The game was drawn in 43 moves.

Women’s Candidates 2026 Round 13 Results: Assaubayeva Ties Vaishali

5Anna MuzychukUkraine6.5/13
6Kateryna LagnoFIDE6.5/13
7Tan ZhongyiChina5.5/13
8Divya DeshmukhIndia5/13

Three decisive results reshaped the Women’s standings heading into the final round. Assaubayeva beat Muzychuk in a 44-move Scotch Game, using almost no time through the first 13 moves to reach what commentators Judit Polgar and David Howell called a “pleasant and risk-free” position on the official FIDE broadcast. Muzychuk’s 32…a6, played with under 3 minutes on the clock, was the error that allowed Assaubayeva’s passed b-pawn (a pawn with no opposing pawn blocking its path to promotion) to decide the game.

The Game of the Day came from Goryachkina against Zhu Jiner. Goryachkina was ready to accept a draw by threefold repetition on move 27, but Zhu, who has had 9 decisive games in 13 rounds, chose to play on despite holding an extra pawn. That decision backfired when Zhu blundered with 51.Re5, and Goryachkina instantly found the winning 51…Kh8. Lagno beat Divya Deshmukh in 37 moves in a one-sided Caro-Kann.
