Netflix’s Untold: Chess Mates premieres today, April 7, 2026, and it covers the biggest scandal in modern chess history: the 2022 cheating allegations between World Champion Magnus Carlsen and 19-year-old Grandmaster (GM) Hans Niemann. The documentary traces Magnus Carlsen’s shock withdrawal from the Sinquefield Cup, the cheating allegations against Niemann, and the fallout that consumed the chess world for over a year.
This is the first chess episode in Netflix’s popular Untold docuseries, directed by Thomas Tancred and executive produced by Chapman Way and Maclain Way. A 71-second teaser dropped on March 10 and has already sparked intense debate across the chess community.

What Happened at the 2022 Sinquefield Cup
On September 4, 2022, 19-year-old American Grandmaster Hans Niemann defeated Magnus Carlsen, then the reigning World Chess Champion, in Round 3 of the Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis. The next day, Carlsen withdrew from the tournament without explanation, posting a video of football manager Jose Mourinho saying “I prefer not to speak. If I speak, I am in big trouble.”
The chess world erupted. On September 19, in the Julius Baer Generation Cup online event, Carlsen resigned after just one move against Niemann, a public accusation without words. He later released a formal statement accusing Niemann of cheating “more, and more recently, than he has publicly admitted.”
In October 2022, Chess.com published a 72-page report stating Niemann had “likely cheated in more than 100 online games,” including prize events. Niemann admitted to cheating online at ages 12 and 16 but denied ever cheating over the board.
The Lawsuit and Resolution
On October 20, 2022, Niemann filed a $100 million defamation lawsuit against Carlsen, Chess.com, and Hikaru Nakamura, alleging they had colluded to destroy his career. A federal judge dismissed the lawsuit in June 2023. The parties then reached a confidential out-of-court settlement in August 2023. Niemann was reinstated on Chess.com and said he was “pleased” with the resolution.

Where Are They Now in 2026?
Magnus Carlsen remains the dominant force in rapid and blitz chess, holding the world No. 1 ranking in both formats (rapid Elo 2832, blitz Elo 2869). He won the 2026 FIDE Freestyle World Championship, his 21st world title, beating Fabiano Caruana in the final. Carlsen relinquished the classical World Championship title in 2023 but continues to compete at the highest level in shorter time controls and select classical events.
Hans Niemann has firmly established himself as a top-tier GM, with a classical Elo rating above 2700. He finished 5th at the same 2026 Freestyle World Championship and is currently competing in the Grenke Freestyle Open in Karlsruhe alongside Carlsen. Both players posted perfect early-round scores. The cheating allegations did not derail his career — the controversy raised his profile enormously and made him one of the most recognized names in chess.
Their 2024 Speed Chess Championship rematch, which Carlsen won, is also covered in the documentary.
Why This Matters for Chess
The Carlsen-Niemann scandal was a watershed moment for chess. It forced the sport to confront fair play, online integrity, and the power dynamics between established champions and rising players. FIDE subsequently strengthened its anti-cheating protocols, and Chess.com’s report raised broader questions about how online platforms police fair play.
“This situation has brought a lot of attention to the issue of cheating in chess, and that is a good thing.” — Arkady Dvorkovich, FIDE President, in a 2022 statement on the organization’s strengthened fair play measures
For chess fans following the Candidates Tournament 2026, where Sindarov leads at 6/7, the documentary provides compelling context about the pressures and stakes at the highest level of the game.
